Here’s an article from TIME Magazine about visceral fat, belly fat around the organs. Researchers looked at medical records from over 400,000 people and found that those who carried different combinations of genes that predisposed them to higher waist to hip ratios had higher incidences of diabetes and heart disease. This is an interesting finding because it allows scientists and doctors to trace disease risks all the way back to a person’s DNA. However, one major takeaway from this study is that visceral fat is also highly influenced by environmental factors, such as a healthy diet and plentiful exercise.
