Here’s a fascinating article from The New York Times about salt and weight loss. Conventional wisdom tells us that if we eat a lot of salt, we become thirsty and drink more fluids in order to excrete the excess salt and reach homeostasis. However studies involving Russian cosmonauts have showed that a high salt diet caused the crew members to drink less fluid and burn more calories. The studies found the high salt diet caused the cosmonauts to produce a higher level of glucocorticoid hormones which increased their energy expenditures, making them burn more calories.
